Yesterday, red-haired Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to win the Wimbledon tournament, beating two-time defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

I had already talked about him here. He was born in 2001 in Alto Adige, a German-speaking area in northern Italy, and began playing in professional men's events at age 16.
He is not the first red-haired tennis player to win important tornaments. We can remember, for example, Jim Courier, Boris Becker (although, apparently, he used to bleach his hair to look blond), Rod Laver, Donald Budge, Maurice McLoughlin, Mark Woodforde and, among the ladies, Pauline Betz and Margaret Osborne duPont.
